Diagnostics 101

The parts-cannon problem

A lot of shops and DIYers handle electrical problems by throwing parts at them. New battery, new alternator, new starter — and the car still won't start reliably. Wiring faults don't get fixed that way. They get fixed with a wiring diagram, a multimeter, and patience.

How real electrical diagnostics works

• Start with the symptom and the circuit, not the part
• Pull the wiring diagram for that circuit from the manufacturer's service data
• Measure voltage drop at each connector — not just continuity
• Check grounds. Most weird electrical faults are bad grounds
• If it's intermittent, wiggle test under load with a live meter

When to bring it in

If a shop tells you they replaced parts but the problem "comes and goes," that's a diagnostic problem, not a parts problem. Come see us. We'd rather charge you for an hour of real diagnostic time than for a stack of parts you didn't need.
